It is survival horror with a Twin Peaks / Silent Hill mood rather than constant jump scares: dark small-town streets, scarce ammo and unsettling dream sequences.

Relaxed (less damage taken, more dealt, doubled item stacks), Tense, Survival Horror (intended), Nightmare (much higher damage taken, 35% fewer ammo pickups, more frequent fights). Pocket Tactics: combat unforgiving outside Relaxed, ammo scarce, melee weapons need duct tape/repair kits. Insider Gaming: lowest difficulty very forgiving; higher tiers can feel suffocating. Reviewers criticize boss fights (bullet sponges - Pocket Tactics; clunky combat - GameSpew).

Reviewers compare it to Resident Evil (inventory and resource management), Silent Hill, Alan Wake and Twin Peaks (atmosphere and story). It plays as a 2.5D side-scrolling metroidvania.

Only in structure. Both are metroidvanias with an interconnected map and backtracking, but Silver Pines is survival horror: guns with scarce ammo, breakable melee weapons, coin-paid saves, puzzles and codes, and progress gated by items and keys rather than movement abilities. Reviewers have compared it to Resident Evil and Silent Hill, not Hollow Knight.
